21 Thyme

21
Thyme
Thymbra capitata
Iliad 7.1-7
So saying, glorious Hector rushed from the gates, and with him went his brother Alexander; and in their hearts both were eager for war and battle. And as a god gives to longing seamen a fair wind when they have grown weary of driving the sea with polished oars of fir, and with weariness are their limbs loosened, so appeared these two to the longing Trojans.
在LSJ也提到ἐλάτη另一層意義,一種很像希臘杉木的海草(sea-weed supposed to resemble the fir, Cystoseira Abies-marina)
l  μέμαα: to wish eagerly, strive, yearn, desire
l  ἔλδομαι wish, long
l  πολεμίζω: wage war, fight
l  πυλεών wreath
l  ἐκσεύομαι rush out
l  φαίδιμος shining, radiant, glistening
l  οὖρος fair wind
l  εὔξεστος well-polished
l  ἐλάτη silver fir, Abies cephalonica
1.thyme, Ar., etc. 2.a mixture of thyme with honey and vinegar, id=Ar. deriv. uncertain; A.“θύμω” Pherecr.167: pl., “θύμα” Eup.14.5, Antiph.179.4: gen. “θύμων” Ar.Pl.283; “θυμέων” AP9.226.2 (Zonas):—also θύμος , ὁ, Dsc.3.36:— Cretan thyme, Thymbra capitata, ll.cc., Hp.Vict.2.54, al.; “τὸ μύρον φάσκειν οὐδὲν τοῦ θ. ἥδιον ὄζειν” Thphr.Char.4.1. b. a marine plant, Id.HP4.7.2. 2. mixture of thyme with honey and vinegar, eaten by the poor of Attica, Ar.Pl.253, cf. 283, Antiph.226.7, Luc.Fug.14, Hsch.

Ulmus glabra
Iliad 6.407-28
But Andromache came to his side weeping, and clasped his hand and clasped his hand and spoke to him, saying: "Ah, my husband, this might of yours will be your doom, and you have no pity for your infant child or for unfortunate me, who soon will be your widow; for soon will the Achaeans all set on you and slay you. But for me it would be better to go down to the grave if I lose you, for never more will any comfort be mine, when you have met your fate, but only woes. Neither father have I nor queenly mother. My father noble Achilles slew, and utterly laid waste the well-peopled city of the Cilicians, Thebes of the lofty gates. He slew Eetion, but he stripped him not of his armor, for he shrank from doing that; but he burn him in his elaborate armor, and heaped over him a mound; and all about were elm trees planted by nymphs of the mountain, daughters of Zeus who bears the aegis. And the seven brothers of mine in our halls, all these on the very same day enter into the house of Hades, for all were slain by swift-footed, noble Achilles, among their cattle of shambling gait and their white-fleeced sheep. And my mother, who was queen beneath wooded Placus, her brought he here with the rest of the booty, but he set her free again, when he had taken ransom past counting; and in her father's halls Artemis the archer slew her.
l  the well-peopled city of the Cilicians指安居樂業的一個城邦。
l  ὑψίπυλος: with high gates.
l   Andromache的父親Eetion
