因為聽故事的Penelope要求，說故事的老乞丐Odysseus侃侃而談，他依稀記得，二十年前，Odysseus穿著紫色雙層羊絨外袍，上有黃金金扣，兩個扣上有針孔，上面還有非常自然寫實風格的雕飾，一隻狗用前腳逮住小鹿。此外，他還看見Odysseus穿著一件光亮閃爍的衣衫，有如曬乾的洋蔥的一層表皮，這個比喻和我們今天說的「洋蔥式」穿衣服法不一樣，是把衣服透明閃閃發光，比喻成洋蔥薄片的光亮:

τὸν δὲ χιτῶν᾽ ἐνόησα περὶ χροῒ σιγαλόεντα,

οἷόν τε κρομύοιο λοπὸν κάτα ἰσχαλέοιο (Odyssey 19. 232-233)

I noticed the tunic on his body—

glistening like the skin of a dry onion—

ἰσχαλέος dried

λοπός peel

κρόμυον an onion/ κρόμμυον onion, Allium Cepa

當時的Odysseus真是描述得太逼真了，太細節了。但是，是非常真實的謊言，只能證明說故事的人真的知道當時Odysseus的服飾，事實上，其他部分全是假的。
